Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

The road between Whaley Bridge and Buxton was turnpiked in 1724, as an extension of the Manchester to Stockport road, and was therefore the first turnpike road in any part of Derbyshire. (1) The course of this first turnpike was later diverted in favour of a more suitable route slightly further west. The original route is shown on Burdett's map of 1767, but is marked as 'Old Turnpike' on a private enclosure map of 1776, with the new route [SMR 31678] marked as 'New Turnpike'. (2, 3)
