Full Description

The construction of Willington Bridge was authorised by Act of Parliament in 1835, with the first stone being laid in 1836. The bridge and new road serving it were opened for public use three years later. Prior to this the river had been without a bridge crossing between Burton and Swarkestone. It was expressly stated in the Act that the new bridge would not be deemed a County Bridge. No new ferry or ford could be made within a mile of it, and a toll gate or toll bar was to be erected on the bridge or near it. Willington Bridge was freed from toll by public subscription in 1898.
