Full Description

The remains of Mandale Mine engine house in Lathkill Dale. There is an associated leat. (1). Photograph collection (2) 1840-1850 engine house of Mandale Mine contained a water driven pump which dewatered the Mandale Mines. House was built of limestone with gritstone coping. (4) Enough of the footprint of this engine house remains to show it measured 5.1m by 6.3m internally and 6.3m by 8.3m externally. The bob wall of this 1840s Cornish-type pumping engine house stands to full height. Up to 8.3m of this is visible to the inside, but with the base buried, with a full original height of c. 10.5m; the sides and back wall would have been higher by 3-4m but outside the building these are buried by about 4m, with the surrounding land at the same height as the dressing floor and the original ground floor level inside the building. Both side walls have been largely removed but with some features remaining on the remnant to the south-west, whilst there are minimal visible remains of the back and north-east side. All was repointed during conservation undertaken by English Heritage and Natural England in 2005. The basement area is partially filled with demolition debris, where there is a hollow with side sloping down towards the bob wall; the cylinder block at the other end of the interior may have been removed as commonly this was placed just above the height to which the fill now extends in the south-eastern half of the building. Somewhat more of the external face of the bob wall is visible, as this lies at one end of a large pit that contains the capped engine shaft, with the walls of a large waterwheel pit lying beyond.
