Full Description

Ashover Quarry was included in a report into the potential to re-establish the roofing slate industry of the South Pennine region. Owned by Realstone but not operating and heavily overgrown with mature trees. Many large holes excavated with 'walls' between. Reportedly a millstone quarry. No sign of the rock - buried by leaf mold and conifers. Water and power across the road. Chatsworth Grit. (1) Ashover Quarries are shown situated off Jaggers Lane but disused on the 1st edition 25" Ordnance Survey map of c. 1880. (2) The 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey map of c. 1900 appears to show them in use and extended from the 1st edition map. (3) The 3rd edition 25" Ordnance Survey map of the early 20th century shows the quarry as disused. (4)
