Full Description
Birch Vale Quarries were included in a report into the potential to re-establish the roofing slate industry of the South Pennines region. They were listed as two quarries, both large and active producing aggregates. Owner said there are no slate beds. Woodhead Hill Rock. (1)
There are two small Quarries shown off Hayfield Road on the 1st edition 25" Ordnance Survey map of c. 1880. (2)
Modern maps show a much larger quarry has exhumed the two older quarries shown on the 1st edition map. (3)
