Full Description
Woodhead Pass Quarries were included in a study into the potential to re-establish the roofing slate industry of the South Pennine region. These are a series of quarries alongside the road, appearing to be borrow pits for road and/or dam construction. There was no sign of any slatey rock when visited. The geology is Kinderscout Grit lower. (1)
There is a series of quarries along Woodhead Road shown on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey map of c. 1900. (2)
Modern maps show there are still some extant earthworks. (3)
