Full Description
Coal used to be brought by horse and cart down Cow Lane from Stephenson's Colliery, passing over Bilby Lane Bridge. It was then loaded onto canal boats at Richard Dixon's private wharf. More coal was brought to the wharf from Dixon's own West Handley Colliery and glassware was brought down, by overhead ropeway, from Dixon's 'Glasshouses' site for trans-shipment. Bilby Lane Bridge has since been replaced by a concrete slab. (1)
