Full Description
In 1946, two white coal kilns were excavated in Nor Wood by Dr. and Mrs. W A Timperley, where at least 71 examples of other q-pits were noted in the area. They were placed on sloped ground, many on the edges of steep ravines, with a gully or channel. The presence of features suggestive of charcoal platforms were noted in the vicinity. (1)
Excavation of two Q-pits in Norwood were undertaken between 1946 and 1950 where the interpretation was that the features were ritualistic, with even Gordon Childe seeing one of the excavations, noting that the site 'raised a real archaeological problem'. Records of the work seem to cover 1946 to 1957 where there was in increase in noting features within the woods as being hearths and smelters. No clear map has been found, though there are references to 20 Q-pits within the general Owler Carr area, and a further nine in Norwood. (2)
