Full Description

This public house was once a coaching inn, built for the new turnpike road to Sheffield and Chesterfield. It opened in 1795. With the onset of the motor age, the coach house to the right hand side of the property became a motor repair garage with a petrol pump. The tollhouse stood to the left of the public house and behind was land that had been used as a recreation ground for over a hundred years. It is now the home of the Sheffield Football Club, the oldest football club in the world. (1)
