Building record MDR16171 - Stone baulks outside Nos 7-20 (consec.) & Nos 25-36 (consec.), Long Row, Belper
Type and Period (2)
Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
Grade II listed stone baulks, small and square on plan with rounded corners and concave tops, dated 1794-1797. There is a stone kerb in front of the railway bridge preserving the line of front garden kerbs and stone baulks in front of the houses along the north side of the street. The baulks were probably intended to keep carts out of the gully and away from the stone garden kerbs, which were originally railed. Their concave tops suggest they may also have been intended to serve as small mounting blocks when required. (1)
