Full Description

Oak Cottage, built in the mid 19th century, was originally a simple cottage of two-cell plan and a loft. The pointed arched windows, rusticated stone surrounds and stylised joinery, resembling leaf forms, and the overhanging eaves with timber, pointed fascia boards, create a distinctive and decorative exterior. Internally a large, stone fire surround survives against the rear wall of the ground floor, and timber beams are evident in the ceiling here. It is clear the roof structure has been at least partially replaced. The cottage has been extended to the south and the rear and the ground-floor interior opened up to create an open plan living space. The stair which divided the two ground-floor rooms has been moved to the rear extension of the building. There is a single room in the loft. Oak Cottage was built in the mid 19th century for the Lumsdale Estate, probably to house the gardener to Lumsdale House. It was assessed for Listing in 2016, but was not deemed to be intact enough for inclusion on the National List. (1)
