Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

Originally a two-storey limestone barn, measuring 13 paces x 10 paces and surveyed by the DerwentWISE Field Barn Project in April 2016. The building is now ruinous and crumbling to one storey, located off Doghole Lane, just beyond Middleton Moor and beside a large air vent for Middleton Mine. In very bad general condition with no roof, windows or doors remaining, the crumbling walls are completely exposed. Built in two sections, the smaller south-west outer section may be a later addition. There are iron railings in the main section that may have been used for penning animals, and a low trough along the south facing side. See survey reports for further details. (1,2,3) The original barn structure would appear to be visible on the first edition 25" OS Map of c. 1880. (4) The additional outer structure would appear to be visible on the second edition 25" OS Map of c. 1900. (5)
