Full Description

Small, isolated quarries exist within this area by the 1st edition 25" OS map of c. 1880. (1) 'Smalldale Works (Lime)' appears on the 2nd edition 25" OS map of c. 1900. (2) The works continue to expand throughout the early 20th century. (3, 4) Earthworks representing the remains of these works and the associated quarrying activity are still visible on modern aerial photographs [2016]. Modern works buildings now occupy the northern-most area. There is a small building at SK 0955 7690 that may have been associated with the former lime works. Much of the earthworks to the west of Smalldale Road have been engulfed by the active Dove Holes Quarry [see SMR 11663]. (5)
