Full Description
A ruined 4m x 4m field barn in a very bad overall condition, built of random limestone rubble with walls remaining to 2m high (3.6m at the Gable ends) and no roof, and dating to at least the late 19th century. The barn is located off a track west of a footpath running north from Middleton towards Groaning Tor, and was surveyed as part of the DerwentWISE Field Barn Project in May 2016. There are door openings in the north-east and south-west elevations, with internal rendering on the walls and a low gritstone stall divider and metal tethering bar suggesting prior use for animal stock. There is limestone paving to the animal standing areas. A later 20th century barn [MDR16575] abuts this building. See survey report for further details. (1)
The barn is present on the first edition 25"OS Map of c. 1880. (2)
An extant 19th century outfarm formed of a single structure was identified at this location as part of an Historic Farmsteads Project in 2016. The site is in an isolated location. All the traditional buildings remain extant. (3, 4, 5, 6)
