Full Description

The Old Barn, northwest of Pike Hall Farm, A5012, Hartington Nether Quarter, originally a mid-18th century building. 'Pike Hall Farm, Hartington Nether Quarter. Partially extant 18th century farmstead. The farmstead is formed of a regular courtyard of L-plan with additional detached elements to the main plan and three sides of the yard formed of agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. The site is located within or in association to a hamlet, with one or more of the structural elements dating to the 18th century. Large modern sheds have been identified on the site, and may have destroyed or obscured historic buildings. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings.' (1-4) From the National Heritage List for England: 'PIKEHALL SK 15 NE 10/104A (north side) Stable to the West of Pikehall Farmhouse GV II Stable with hayloft above and attached later stable range to the west. Mid C18 and early C19. Coursed limestone rubble with gritstone dressings and quoins. Corrugated asbestos roofing with one and a half coped gables with kneelers. 2 storey. L-plan. West front has 2 ground floor doorways with massive quoins and lintels, the left doorway has a stable door, and the right doorway is now partially blocked. In the angle a flight of external stone steps leading to another quoined doorway with stable door. To the east is an attached single storey, 6 bay, later range, with 2 stable doors in flush gritsone surrounds each flanked by single 2 light casements in similar surrounds.
