Full Description
The Alders is a partially extant 18th century farmstead of a linear plan. The farmhouse was attached to the agricultural range. The site was in an isolated location. The farmhouse is the only surviving traditional structure. (1-4)
A grade II listed farmhouse of 18th century date. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and has flush gritstone dressings. It has a stone slate roof and stone gable end stacks. It is of two storeys, and two bays. The south elevation has a central doorcase obscured by a 20th century glazed porch. To either side are three-light flush mullion windows with casements. There are two similar windows over. (5)
The Alders was listed in 1984 as a small, mid-late 18th century vernacular dwelling. In 2008, the building suffered calamitous fire damages which destroyed the interior of the building including its roof structure. Later that year, the building was repaired and extended, with its interior renewed beneath a new roof structure and covering. Its vernacular origins are still in evidence in its external walls, but its special architectural interest has been severely compromised. The building is no longer considered to be of special interest, given the high levels of loss of original fabric and it has therefore been removed from the List. (6)
