Full Description

Site of Outfarm, Wirksworth. 19th century outfarm. The outfarm was formed of a single structure. The site was in an isolated location. All traditional buildings have been lost. (1) (2) (3) (4) The barn was built in the period 1835 and 1849, following the enclosure Act of 1802. Enclosure meant that it was necessary for farmers to build shelters close to where their livestock grazed. It was probably originally a cowshouse. A lean-to extension was added to the west, sometime before 1879, probably for calves. There is no indication that any associated buildings have been demolished. (5)
