Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

Approximately two thirds of a Romano-British quern (top part), made from local gritstone, was spotted by a member of the public at Shaw Farm at SJ 98956 86588. It is slightly unusual in having two (possibly originally four) square pecked holes on its upper surface surrounding the central rounded pouring hole. There is also a shallow rectangular cut on the underside, possibly for a metal insert. Possibly 2nd-3rd century AD. (1)
