Full Description
Weir in palaeochannel, reservoir, Barrow upon Trent, dating from the 8th to 10th century.
A V-shaped fish weir identified in a palaeochannel to the north of the River Trent between 2001 and 2006. The palaeochannel was broad and infilled by a series of silts and sands. Inside the palaeochannel a series of vertical oak posts were identified. Upon investigation, 67 oak posts were located. These took the form of two double rows of posts, spaced c0.5m apart, that narrowed downstream to a fish trap c1m wide. The posts had been driven at least c0.7m into the stream bed and many of them preserved traces of toolmarks, and 'traces of abrasion.'
The excavators believed that the vertical posts probably supported wattle hurdles, perhaps with brushwood bundles at their base to prevent fish escaping and to attract fish seeking places to hide. Substantial portions of several panels were found, in some case there was evidence that they had been renewed over time. It was not possible to date samples of the timbers using tree-ring analysis. (1)
Radiocarbon dating of seven samples from the timbers indicated that the weir dated to between the 8th and 10th centuries. (2)
