Full Description

19th century gritstone culvert, Baslow and Bubnell and Holmesfield parish boundary, A621, possibly replaced since 2017. 'No crossing point of Blake Brook is known prior to 1810 when the proposed turnpike road from Sheffield to Baslow was re-surveyed... The section of this road from Owler Bar to Baslow which crosses Blake Brook was sanctioned by Act of Parliament in 1803 and appears to have been opened in 1818. The construction of the culvert appears to date from the original construction of the road with the exception of the upstream headwall which is partially built of squared, coursed gritstone masonry which may represent a rebuilding event. Derbyshire County Council, however, has no record of reconstruction work on the culvert…' (1) A photographic survey of the condition of the culvert was carried out in 2017, in advance of its proposed replacement by a modern concrete construction. (1) Please note, it is not known if or when this reconstruction took place.
