Full Description

SK 1759 8091: Bradwell, Cist Burials, Extended Inhumation: A Barrow found in 1891 (1) on the site, occupied in 1957, by two two houses owned by Mr. H. Hayes of Dore, Sheffield and by Mrs. Mabbot, contained two contracted inhumations in the remains of a cist, and an extended skeleton with square stones at head and foot. (1, 2) The discovery was made during the construction of two kitchen extensions for two houses on Bradwell hills, facing the Green. A rough flint flake was found in the cist. (7) The single source for these finds (1), appears to have assumed that a barrow covered the burials, on rather flimsy evidence, any mound here may well have been the product of later building. (6)
