Full Description

Bison bone with cut marks, near junction of Stoke Brook and River Derwent, Calver, of uncertain but probable prehistoric date. A fused radius and ulna of a bison, with cut marks, was found near the footbridge on an eroded river bank near the confluence of Stoke Brook with the River Derwent, on 9 March 2022 by a member of the Calver Marshes Wildlife Project: '…the recent high waters had obviously deposited it up on the stream bank and the bridge had stopped the bone from flowing any further downstream to the River Derwent, approximately 30m away.' (1) The bone was described as 'remarkably heavy,' and was photographed by the manager of Buxton Museum (please see linked photos). The bone is in the possession of the private member of the public who found it. (1) Please note that bison are generally thought to have been in the UK until c6000BP.
