Gatehouse to Mackworth Castle, Lower Road, Mackworth, the remains of a late 15th or early 16th century building.
From the National Heritage List for England:
'SK 33 NW PARISH OF MACKWORTH LOWER ROAD 6/83 (North Side) Gatehouse to 13.2.67 Mackworth Castle (formerly listed as ruins of of Mackworth Castle) GV I Gatehouse to Mackworth Castle, which was probably a fortified manor house. c1495-1500. Sandstone ashlar with repairs and additions in red brick. Only the front and side walls remain. Two storeys, chamfered plinth, battlemented parapet, and moulded stringcourse. South elevation of three bays. Central gateway with four- centred arch and depressed crocketed ogee hoodmould. Full height buttresses on either side with two set-offs. Three windows above, under flat arches and with the remains of cusped tracery, showing them to have been 2-light windows with a transom. String- course with gargoyles. Corbelled out circular angle turrets. Polygonal chimney stack. Rear elevation has brick repair, the remains of a fireplace and a spiral stair, later brick lean- to sheds. Also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
