Full Description

Former site of former general store and post office, Main Road, Stoney Middleton, a late 19th or early 20th century building. The building was subject to a survey in 2021, in advance of its proposed demolition: the former village store and post office was part of a mid-Victorian to early twentieth century tradition of constructing timber-framed buildings, prefabricated, designed as temporary and often moved and re-purposed later. Internally the building was comprised of a large room which has been subdivided by the insertion of a small room in the northeast corner, which was the former post office. The basement is a single room with a high and wide opening in the north elevation. The north elevation has gritstone quoins with pintles present on both sides indicating that it originally had double doors. The opening has been narrowed and modern patio doors inserted. The size of the original opening indicates it was a cart shed. The south frontage of the former shop had an off-centred doorway, which was flanked by three large two light square headed windows to the west and six to the east. Above the east windows the mechanism for a canopy was found. (1) According to current Google imagery (Streetview, 2023) the building has been demolished.
