Full Description

No. 31 Chapel Street, Ticknall, a mid-19th century former outbuilding. An historic fabric building survey was carried out in 2022 in advance of this buildings conversion into a private dwelling: '…the building is brick built. The west facing elevation consists of three bays with timber doors. The outside structure has traces of an earlier lime mortar pointing. Both the east facing elevation and the north facing elevations are inaccessible. A view of the north facing elevation confirms evidence of a ruined building. It is likely that this is remnants of the building that was mapped in the 20th century. The interior of the building consists of five bays, the principal range consists of four similar sized bays. There is no evidence of original use within. The rear east wall is a rubble built wall, possibly a pre existing boundary wall laid out during the 18th century enclosures, which established the plots on the north side of Chapel Street. No evidence of use but it is likely that the range was a set of loose boxes. The Queen posts are bolted at the heel, a feature which is predominantly post-1860s in date. From cartographic evidence the building dates to the 1840s or 1850s. Between bays 2 and 3 there are burn marks, which may have been created from a deliberate act of burning the timbers to warn of evil.' (1)
