Full Description

Former site of three blister hangars, Riverside Business Park, Buxton Road, Bakewell, probably built after the Second World War. A building survey was carried out in 2022 in advance of the proposed demolition of these buildings. According to Google imagery (Streetview) dating to 2023, at least two of the buildings have been demolished since the survey. According to this survey: 'the late 20th century saw the former Lumford Mill site be used for the storage of electrical batteries, and these hangars likely supporting this function. The buildings appear to have had a continued industrial use up to present day. A range of alterations to the buildings had taken place late 20th and early 21st centuries. Two access points were added to BH2 and BH3, which provided interconnectivity between the structures, as well as new doors inserted, as seen with the eastern elevation of BH3 and the western interior wall of BH2. A range of modern timber structures had been added, to subdivide the space for warehouse use, with the majority of these removed before this report. This phase also saw modern ceiling tiles and corrugated sheeting added to the underside of the interior roof structure, as well as the installation of large girders to support the roof within BH1 and BH3. Evidence within the fabric of the blister hangers suggests that they had been built on the Lumford Mill site after the Second World War. The width of the access sliding doors of the structures would not have been wide enough to allow small-span aircraft access into the hangers. This suggests that they had likely been built to facilitate an industrial use. Also, the Lumford Mills site does not appear to have ever sat in the context of an airfield. The blister hangars are larger in size than the recognised size being c87ft in width and c69ft in length.' (1)
