Full Description

Former site of National School, Woodville Road, Overseal, built in 1875, demolished in 1986. Previously Grade II Listed: 'School. 1875 with minor later additional and alterations. Red brick with blue brick banding at sill and lintel level of the windows, stone, red and blue brick dressings, and stone plinth with blue brick copings. Steeply pitched slate roof with red slate banding, crested terracotta ridge tiles, chamfered stone copings to gables and two brick ridge stacks on stone bases with decorative brickwork, also with tapering square base of a former cupola to west end of ridge. Single storey, L-plan, and two bays. South front has advanced gabled bay to west with large 3-light transomed plate tracery window set below a pointed relieving arch of stone, red and blue brick voussours. Above, the gable has a moulded stringcourse with decorative brick patterning over and a central cusped stone circle with coat of arms on a shield to the middle. Recessed to east there is an advanced porch bay with central plank door below bracketed porch roof flanked by 3-light timber mullion windows with trefoil headed lights. Beyond to west there is an advanced gabled bay flanked by 3-light stone mullioned windows, also with trefoil headed lights. Gabled bay has a 2-light transomed plate tracery window set in chamfered pointed stone, red and blue brick arch with moulded stringcourse above. East gable wall has an advanced low bay with trefoil headed timber mullion windows to either side of segment headed doorcase which has a plaque above dated '1875'. Above, the gable wall has two small lancets to either side of a central circular window with small recessed quatrefoils over. North elevation has corrugated iron addition of no special interest to west corner. West elevation has two advanced gabled bays to centre with pairs of adjoining Caernarvon arched windows to either side. Each gabled bay has a 2-light transomed plate tracery window set below stone, red and blue brick relieving arch and a buttress to either side. Between the two gables there are three small stone lancets and above each gable has a band for sawtooth brickwork with small stone quatrefoils over set in herringbone brickwork. To either side of the gables the roof has small raking vents. Interior is very simple with painted brick walls and arched braced roof trusses.' DCC LB card is stamped with 'Demolished 1986, Delisted 21/06/2013.'
