The Cottage, Long Lane, Shipley, probably built in 1779. From the National Heritage List for England: 'PARISH OF SHIPLEY NEWMANLEYS ROAD SK 44 NE 3/41 (East Side) The Cottage at Shipley Gate Lock GV II Two cottages, now one. Late C18 with C20 alterations. Rendered brick with pantiled roof, belled to eaves,and with rendered gable stacks, that to east external. Slate roof to single storey projection with gable stack to north. Two storeys, two bays. North elevation has C20 window in segment headed opening to west and another C20 window to east. Between is the gabled projection, formerly a kitchen or wash-house, which has a plain sash to centre of west face and a C20 door to east face. Attached to south of west face is a C20 lean-to porch. Above, two glazing bar horizontal sliding sashes. South elevation facing the canal is blank. Probably built as lock keepers' cottages for the Erewash Canal which was constructed in 1779.
