Full Description
Rectilinear enclosure, burial and features off Mansfield Road, Clowne, probably dating to between the 1st and 3rd centuries.
A rectilinear, ditched enclosure was recorded by an evaluation carried out in 2017, and had previously been recorded by an earlier geophysical survey. The complex of features was summarised as follows: 'The shape and size of the features present suggests that the ditches formed part of an enclosure associated with nearby settlement. Pottery from some of the features suggests an occupation period of 1st-3rd centuries with the majority of finds from the late 1st and 2nd centuries, although a few later sherds were also present. The presence of animal remains including foetal pig remains suggests that the site contained managed livestock. The environmental evidence suggests residue from food processing and possible spoilage from a hearth. Although no direct evidence for occupation in the form of structures was identified these results suggest that there was settlement ...nearby and that this is a domestic site.' (1)
An undated burial was also recorded just to the east - southeast of the enclosure, cut into bedrock: 'The grave cut consisted of a vertical-sided grave oriented [roughly] north-south. The length of the exposed cut was 1.1m with a width of 1.3m at the edge of the trench and a depth of 0.77m. ...The fill also contained some charcoal and stones. ...supine position with the arms extended and the preservation of the bones was fair.' The area had previously been recorded by a geophysical survey carried out in 2017. (2)
