Full Description

Former site of Hopping Mill weir, north of Foundry Mill, Belper, an 18th century structure. A heritage impact assessment of the Milford Weirs, carried out in 2020, found: 'Hopping Mill Weir was removed by 1853. It was recorded in a painting by Thomas Smith, c1744. A corn mill is first recorded in 1415 and was probably served off a leat with the river dammed to create a more reliable flow into the leat; given the size of the River, it is likely that there was a weir at this point.'
