Full Description

Pit, near former Highfields Farm, Bakeacre Lane, Findern, of Bronze Age date. During excavations carried out in 2017, a pit 0.5m in diameter and 0.2m deep was excavated: '…a number of similar pits were found in close proximity but did not contain any datable evidence. …30 sherds of prehistoric pottery. All are in the same fabric and almost certainly represent a single vessel. All are body sherds, …no diagnostic features… body walls are relatively thick (11-12mm). The fabric is coarse, containing a moderate frequency of poorly sorted quartz/quartzite and other rock inclusions… these sherds have been dated as Bronze Age. There were also three small, unidentifiable burnt bone fragments and a handful of residual flint.' (1) This is the only identifiable prehistoric feature at this site, which later developed into a substantial late Iron Age - Roman settlement. (1-2)
