Full Description

Three buildings, Kilnhill Farm, Edale Road, Hope, of early 9th century date. An historic building survey was carried out in 2021 in advance of proposed conversion and found: 'The eastern outbuilding was the first to be constructed of the three buildings, ...having been depicted on the 1819 Hope Enclosure Award map. This building had been constructed with the same sandstone as the Grade II Listed farmhouse. The original stone flag floor portrays evidence of previous partition stalls, which would suggest that the building’s original function had been cattle housing. The next building to be constructed was the western outbuilding, between 1847 and 1883 according to cartographic sources. This had been built predominantly of sandstone, and may have originally been smaller in size than the in-situ building, with its eastern portion extended to its current size by 1898. However, this is unclear. If the building had been smaller in size, it may have originally functioned as a privy for the farmhouse. The central outbuilding was constructed between 1883 and 1898, and was built with limestone instead of the sandstone noted within the other buildings on site. The building had been incorporated onto the western exterior wall of the eastern outbuilding. This wall appears to have been extensively rebuilt with limestone, which would suggest that this had occurred when the central outbuilding had been constructed. The two openings on the eastern outbuilding’s western wall are also comprised of limestone surrounds and sills, which would suggest that these date to this period. These were likely used as feeding holes, suggesting the building had also originally functioned as cattle housing. By late 19th century the western outbuilding had also been extended to its current size, and this period also saw the construction of the rubble dry stone lean-to extension. The narrow and low blocked opening on the eastern elevation of the western outbuilding appears to have had a functional connection with this lean-to, and the size of this opening suggests that it had been used as kennels. In the 20th century, further alterations had occurred on the site related to the cattle housing. This included the use of concrete flooring, drainage channels, tethering bars and moulded concrete partitions. These changes are likely to be associated with the Milk and Dairy Regulations (1959), which caused many such alterations to farm buildings. The later 20th and early 21st century had seen few changes to the buildings, with some minor repair work visible. All three buildings had been used for storage at present [2021].' (1)
