Full Description

Waste Dumps, Old Moor Quarry, Wormhill, of 18th to 20th century date. A watching brief and strip, map and sample excavation was carried out between 2021-2022, in three areas, in advance of extensions to the quarry: '… [Area A] revealed a range of features including four sinkholes, the remnants of a collapsed dry stone wall, and four post-medieval pits used for landfill. The cut of the collapsed dry stone wall measured c11.5m in length and was 0.8m wide. ...Of the four post-medieval pits used for landfill, the largest measuring 41.3m in length and over 14m wide. ...Sub-circular pits measured between 1.1m to 2.8m in length and 1m to 2.7m in width.' The finds were of 18th to 20th century date, comprised of pottery, glass, metal and ceramic building material. (1)
