Full Description

Mining pits, off Lower Somercotes, Somercotes, possibly of 14th to 17th century date. Features identified as mining pits, largely corresponding to anomalies recorded by an earlier geophysical survey, were recorded by excavation during trial trenching in 2022: 'Several mining pits were identified in nine trenches at the central and eastern part of site. Although most of these are undated artefactually, most likely they are evidence of coal and ironstone deposits mined as early as the 14th century, with extensive exploitation during the 16th and 17th centuries. Mechanically excavated sondages were not able to determine the depth and exact morphology of these features, but some CBM [ceramic building material] fragments were retrieved from Pit 1102 were dated to broadly modern period.' (1) These features were recorded by a geophysical survey carried out in 2018. (2)
