Full Description

Possible building, off Lower Somercotes, Somercotes, possibly of 16th to 18th century date. A possible building foundation, corresponding to anomalies recorded by an earlier geophysical survey, was recorded by excavation during trial trenching in 2022: 'Structure 1403, recorded in Trench 14, was mapped by the geophysical survey. This feature was not present on the Alfreton Enclosure Map, dated 1812 or and later map of the site. This suggest that the building did not exist even as above ground remains in the early 19th century. The general dating of the brick recovered from the structure suggest that the building was not earlier that 16th century. This could possibly connect the building with the known 17th and 18th century mining activity in the area..' (1) The possible building was recorded by a geophysical survey carried out in 2018. (2)
