Full Description

Former barn, off Hall Lane, Litton, an early to mid 19th century building. The building was subject to an historic building survey in 2021, carried out in advance of its proposed conversion: 'the origins of the barn in question likely dates to the early to mid 19th century, though it could be earlier in date. The building appears to have originated as stables on the ground floor, evidenced by the metal hook fixtures which were likely used for hanging tack and saddle. The doorways with large ashlar jambs and lintels on the western elevation are original, matching the style of ashlar dressings seen on the other farmstead buildings. The first floor of the building originated as a hay loft, evidenced by the original pitching hole with ashlar jambs, lintel and sill and the ventilation slits. The lean-to structure had been built in the early to mid 20th century. From this period, it appears that the early-mid 19th century barn’s function had changed from stables to cattle husbandry, with the installation of the brick and concrete texture floor with drainage channel, and the concrete moulded manger.'
