Full Description

Possible mill leat, The South Park, Chatsworth, of unknown date. Features that could represent a mill leat were recorded during a geophysical survey carried out in 2016: 'A ditch or channel detected in the west of the survey could possibly reflect a former mill leet. This feature has been recorded on the western side of a slight clay bank in the present resistance survey, in an earlier geomagnetic survey and in an evaluation trench. In the north, the channel contains high resistance anomalies and intense geomagnetic anomalies, which reflect brick and stone rubble and metal fragments. To the east of the northern part of the channel, further high resistance and intense geomagnetic anomalies reflect further patches of building rubble and associated debris. An evaluation trench here in 2014 confirmed the presence of demolition debris, which included 20th‐century materials including plastics. A linear high resistance anomaly in the south‐west corner of the survey corresponds to stone revetment at the edge of a raised platform, possibly associated with water management.' (1)
