Full Description

West range farm buildings, Ladywash Farm, Edge Road, Eyam, part of an early to mid 19th century complex. The whole farm was subject to an historic building survey, carried out in 2022: 'Ladywash Farm dates to the early 19th century, originating within a loose courtyard formation. The farm buildings that comprise the northern range of Ladywash Farm, relate to the buildings subject to the survey, which are identified as Building’s 1-5. Building 1 is the earliest of the structures in question for the northern range, dating to the early 19th century. The building originated as a two-storey rectangular structure, likely functioning as cattle housing at ground floor level, and with a hayloft above. The northern outshot of Building 1 dates to the early 19th century, first appearing on the 1839 Eyam Tithe Map. This outshot would have been added to provide more space within Building 1, with further use for cattle housing with a hayloft. Building 4 had been constructed by the mid-late 19th century, first appearing on the 1883 OS Map. Building 4 represents a single-storey cattle house, typical of this typology within the period of High Farming. This period also saw the construction of Building 3’s northern wall, which linked Building’s 1 and 4. The next phase of works dates to the early to mid-20th century, which saw the addition of Building’s 2 and 3, which represent lean-to structures attached to the eastern side of Building 1. The mid-20th century saw extensive alterations to the northern range, associated with the changes in hygiene law for dairy farming. For Building 4, this included the installation of the slurry pit below. Building 5 had been added by the mid-late 20th century, comprising a lean-to structure attached to the northern side of Building 1. This phase also saw further minor changes to the buildings, including the installation of the corrugated roofing sheets, and insertion of the single-light timber framed windows within existing apertures.' (1) The area was subject to a desk-based assessment and walkover survey in 2021. (2)
