Full Description
Millbank, No. 6 The Green, Findern, built c1911.
The building was considered for adding to the National Heritage List for England in 2024 but was rejected. The report on the building and the reasons for its rejection is available. (1)
'Millbank is a house in Findern village thought to have been built sometime after July 1911 for the Pollard family; it has been associated with a document of that date specifying the methods and materials for its construction. The house does not appear on the 1902 Ordnance Survey map, but shows on the 1922 map, making a date in the early 1910s most likely. The house has been vacant since 2009.
In plan the house is ‘L’ Shaped, under a pitched slate roof with gable ends roughly to the north and south and facing east to The Green. It has two plain chimney stacks to the gables. The house is brick-built in Flemish bond, with plain stone cills and lintels to openings. The only decorative feature is the two projecting brick courses at eaves level. Windows are two-over-two timber sashes, the off-centre front door is a late-C20 replacement. Even if unaltered, the interior of a house of this type and date would not be expected to have fixtures and fittings of special interest.
Early C20 domestic buildings are very common with many extant in England, and only the best examples will merit listing. Based on the information provided and with reference to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport's Principles of Selection (2011) and Historic England’s Selection Guides, Millbank, 6 The Green, Findern, is not recommended for listing for the following principal reasons:
Degree of architectural interest:
* the house is of relatively recent date, and its simple, functional design does not demonstrate the level of interest that would be required for a building of this age and type to meet the criteria for listing.
Degree of historic interest:
* the house has some local interest for its traditional construction techniques and documentary evidence linking it with its first owner, but this is not sufficient for the building to be nationally listed.'
