Full Description

Church House and neighbour, North Church Street, Bakewell, a late 18th century building. From the National Heritage List for England: 'BAKEWELL SK2168 NORTH CHURCH STREET 831-1/4/145 (South side) 20/05/74 Church House including attached house to rear and railings (Formerly Listed as: NORTH CHURCH STREET (South side) Church House) (Formerly Listed as: NORTH CHURCH STREET (South side) House adjoining Church House to west) GV II House. Late C18 with early and mid C19 alterations and additions. Deeply-coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings; stone slate and concrete tile roofs. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with cellar, 2-window range; 2-storey, 4-window range to rear right facing North Church Street. Large quoins. Garden front: bay one has 2-storey canted bay window with ashlar surrounds to large 2/2 sashes on ground floor and large 8/8 sashes above; hipped stone slate roof with rolled-lead ridges. Bay 2: single-storey canted bay window in same style; 2/2 sashes; slate roof. Above is an 8/8 sash with projecting stone sill and raised surround; 4/8 sash to second floor similarly treated. Plain kneelers and ashlar gable copings; ashlar end stacks with bands. Right return: plinth with cellar opening; evidence of a blocked round-arched doorway set beneath a 6/6 sash. Main entrance into rear wing has 6-panel door (top 2 panels glazed) in ashlar surround with consoles to moulded stone hood. 3/3 sash to each floor on right. Attached mid C19 house to rear (now part of same dwelling): tooled gritstone and limestone rubble. Central boarded door with plain overlight in ashlar surround flanked by 3/3 sashes with projecting sills and ashlar surrounds. Main door to North Church Street approached by early C19 stone steps to platform with decorative iron handrail. INTERIOR: not inspected. Listing NGR: SK2166868492.' (1)
