Full Description

Avenel Court, King Street, Bakewell, possibly orignally a 16th century building. From the National Heritage List for England: 'BAKEWELL SK2168 KING STREET 831-1/4/113 (North West side) 13/03/51 Avenel Court GV II Formerly known as: Thompson's Drug Stores KING STREET. Shop with attached outbuildings. c1780 facade; part of core probably C16; outbuildings of various dates to rear. Coursed limestone with ashlar dressings; stone slate roof. EXTERIOR: 2-storey, 3-window range to front with attached range of outbuildings extending to rear right and returning to enclose 3 sides of a courtyard. Facade to King Street: chamfered quoins to 2-window range on left which projects and is gabled. Late C18 shop front with part-glazed double doors in pilastered wooden surround with consoles flanked by bow windows with glazing bars beneath dentilled cornice. Two 6/6 sashes to first floor in painted architraves; architraved roundel and ashlar copings to the gable. Bay 3, set back to right, has single-storey canted bay window with 6/6 sashes and flat roof; 10/10 sash to first floor has painted stone surround. Irregular courtyard facades include a replica timber-framed bay with jettied front. INTERIOR: main shop room has corbelled ashlar fireplace and beamed ceilings; oak panelling brought from Norton Lees Hall, Sheffield. Right room with large scantling common joists. To rear are parts of a C17 staircase with pierced finials (also from Norton Lees Hall). First-floor room with much original oak stud partitioning and a principal-rafter truss with curved braces from a collar. Front rooms retain 2-panel doors and other features of the c1780 remodelling. Rear wing includes many reused features. Stable building at end of a range has a crucifix carved on left inner door reveal. HISTORY: the building was formerly an Apothecary's Shop.
