The Reading Room, Hernstone Lane, Peak Forest, built in 1880. From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 17 NW PARISH OF PEAK FOREST 3/2 The Reading Room GV II Public building. Dated 1880. Ashlar gritstone front with rusticated quoins, elsewhere rubble limestone with gritstone dressings. North gable with moulded copings, intermediate stone ridge stack, Welsh slates with crested ridges. Gable to street with tall Venetian window, formerly part of a C17 chapel which stood on the adjacent site of the Church of King Charles the Martyr, and now forming the centrepiece of the elevation. Moulded stringcourse links with keyblock to window arch. Inscription within gable apex reads: '1880 READING ROOM'. Single storey addition of 1983 to south east side. Listing NGR: SK1132879256.' (1)
