Full Description

Rock Cottage, Rake Lane, Middleton and Smerrill, an early 19th century building. From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 16 SE PARISH OF MIDDLETON AND SMERRILL RAKE LANE 4/39 (North Side) Rock Cottage II House. Early C19. Coursed squared limestone with flush gritstone dressings. Plain coped gables, off-centre ridge stacks and Welsh slate roof. Staggered double-pile plan. West elevation; double gabled front, advanced north gable with two storey canted bay with embattled parapet. Full-height embattled turrets to corners. South gable with single turret. Generally 2-light chamfer mullioned windows, with hood moulds, stops, and Gothic glazing, but with single pointed arched opening to north gable ground floor, housing sash frame with Gothic glazing. Contemporary single storey porch in angle of ranges with embattled parapet and four panelled door. South elevation has 2 and 3-light flush mullioned windows. Listing NGR: SK1927363122.' (1)
