Pair of statues depicting enslaved people, Melbourne Hall Gardens, Church Close, Melbourne, of c1700 date. From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 38/3925 PARISH OF MELBOURNE CHURCH CLOSE 6/67 (East Side) 10.11.67 Pair of Pedestals with Lead Slaves in Melbourne Hall Gardens GV I Pair of pedestals with lead slaves. c1700 by Jan van Nost. Erected as part of a French-style garden designed by Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall. Lead statues on stone bases. Both bases are plain with moulded tops, kneeling slaves above have their arms raised holding stone trays, with ornate lead vases on, over their heads. Both statues are naked except for loin cloths, northern statue with loin cloth of feathers and southern statue with plain loin cloth and a turban.
