Grotto southeast of Old Mill, Melbourne Hall Gardens, Melbourne, an early 19th century structure. From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 38/3925 PARISH OF MELBOURNE CHURCH CLOSE 6/88 (East Side) 10.11.67 Grotto to South East of the Old Mill in Melbourne Hall Gardens GV II* Grotto. Early C19. Red brick covered in tufa, shells and marble. Low segmental headed alcove with small semi-circular headed marble niche to back over a small stone pool. Over the niche is a marble inscription reading 'Rest weary stranger in this shady cave, And taste, if languid, of the mineral wave, There's virtue in the draught, for health that flies, From crowded cities and their smoky skies, Here lends her power from every glade and hill Strength to the breeze' C Lamb. This is a later addition to early C18 garden designed by London and Wise, gardeners to Queen Anne, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall. Included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I.
