Monument record MDR3178 - Mine shafts and earthwork banks, Griffe Grange, Hopton

Type and Period (2)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

Mine shafts running SE-NW towards Griffe Wood, and along the edge of Griffe Wood E-W. Cultivation Terraces (SMR 8355) are cut by the mining. A series of earthwork banks are visible near the edge which appear to be cut by the mining, and there is a small rectangular banked enclosure (c. 30m x 30m) once again cut (?) by the mining. These relationships are particularly interesting given the proximity of Pearson's Farm and the evidence for RB settlement excavated there (SMR 8345). (1-2)
