'Le Hardehirst' is mentioned in a document of 1415 and again as 'Hardhurste' in 1610, from 'heard' probably meaning hard to till and 'hyrst', a hillock or copse. (1) The present farm is 18th/19th century, on a knoll above a valley. (2)
