Full Description
[SK 2464 6310 SK 2472 6306] Two burial mounds. (1) Cairns unidentifiable amongst heaps of stone clearance. (2)
A small-scale map (1) was used as the basis for field investigation of Stanton Moor, the grid reference SK 2464 6310 was abstracted for this monument and upon field investigation was not found. (3)
In a later survey of monuments on Stanton Moor, a feature described as an unexcavated oval cairn is recorded (7) and is probably the same monument depicted as a sub-rectangular cairn on a plan of a more recent survey. (8)
The monument is a low sub-oval cairn measuring 7.6m SW-NE by 4.8m and 0.3m high. The mound generally is flat-topped and a mix of earth and weathered stone is exposed. Although no excavation reports have been published, there is evidence that partial excavation has been undertaken by Heathcote; this was limited to clearance of stones around the NE and N arcs. (4)
The west end of the cairn has a slightly circular raised area, approx 2.8m diameter, and it is possible that there are two contiguous cairns appearing as a single long mound,. This morphology is paralleled by other excavations carried out by Heathcote. (5, 6)
