Monument record MDR4820 - Culvert, Dark Lane, Makeney

Type and Period (1)

  • (Post Medieval - 1540 AD to 1900 AD)

Protected Status/Designation

  • World Heritage Site Buffer Zone

Full Description

The culvert which crosses Dark Lane is constructed from large slabs originally without mortar. It was designed to carry run-off and, possibly, spring water from one side of Dark Lane to the other. On the Makeney side the culvert opens into a ditch which runs parallel to the lane, and the culvert opening is lined with dry stone revetting. In March 1995 the culvert was found to be exposed and in poor condition, as the lane surface had been completely washed away. Stones had been broken and/or removed. (1)
