Full Description

Ryknield Street, Roman Road. Section of the Roman road from Derby to Chesterfield running through Shirland & Higham parish. (1) Opencast coal mining destroyed a 3/4mile long section in 1955 at which time emergency excavations were undertaken to examine the construction of the road. Two sections were cut at SK 390573 and SK 390576. Two major construction phases were identified, though no Roman material was found associated with the road, only 14th century potsherds on the surface, suggesting its continued use into the medieval period.
